Review of Top Five (2014) by Bruce B — 31 Jan 2015
Talk about grading on a curve, this movie has somehow managed to bamboozle everybody into ignoring so much terrible acting (mostly by the lead), really poor writing with every single thing right on the nose and characters that have nothing to do with reality. And when I complain of unbelievable characters, I'm not talking about the comical ones that pop up for the occasional laughs, I mean the main characters that are supposed to be driving the story. The journalist in question is incredibly unprofessional...no, this person isn't even a real person, never mind a journalist. Chris Rock's character is totally unbelievable in how he deals with this person. My god, how can a guy with so much talent surrounding him be so unaware of the failures that were present in this script?
Oh, but it's a success and everybody loves it. That's no excuse because frankly the only reason I can even contemplate for positive reviews has to do with Rock's total failure in his acting attempts. For the critics, this imitation of acting is at least better than what he's done in the past that they have to celebrate.
I hung in there just to see the Jerry Seinfeld appearance and even that was embarrassing. Clearly Jerry and Chris and great friends because there is no way Seinfeld would embarrass himself like this for any other reason.
In 5 years people are going to look back on this across-the-board praise for Top 5 and wonder what the hell everybody was smoking.
