Review of Tootsie (1982) by Kate J — 24 Mar 2008
I love "disguise" movies like this (ie: Victor/Victoria, Some Like it Hot, etc) and out of the dozen or so I've seen, this is far and away the best. I can't stop watching it, it's been on a loop for over a week now and I'm not sick of it yet!
I think it's because the director and the actors took it seriously while it was being made that the end result is so naturally, effortlessly hilarious. Lots of great lines, great moments and above everything else Dustin Hoffman's mind-bogglingly convincing turn as a woman. That's what I can't stop watching, because I just can't believe it's him!
Smart, funny, and much more plot than your average comedy; this is a must own. The only thing that disappoints me at all is the ending. I'm still waiting for one of this movies to deal with the confusion and fallout of something as huge as finding out someone you'd become close to is not the gender you thought they were! Come on! That warrants more than two minutes screen time.
