Review of Tootsie (1982) by David B — 16 Mar 2009
I remember seeing this movie when it first came out. The audience was laughing so hard during the "live taping" scene, you couldn't hear the next lines. Happily, this is still hysterically funny - even from my couch.
Actually, I'd place it in the canon of classic comedies. Dustin Hoffman's "Dorothy Michaels" is a wonderful creation. Also, I think Hoffman is probably at his most charming (even out of drag).
One of the things that makes this movie so successful is that the humor is drawn from the characters. It's not just Hoffman running around in heels (yuck-yuck). You understand what his character is going through and you care about him.
This is one I could (and probably will) watch over and over. In fact I'd love to see this on a double-bill with "Some Like It Hot.".
