Review of Tootsie (1982) by Ms Amanda J — 29 Jan 2011
With the sex change operation of Dr. Renee Richards making the news, it was inevitable for such a story to be told. Tootsie was in the works before the tv show Bosom Buddies, but both hit the entertainment business in the same year, and both had similar concepts.
The difference is that Sydney Pollack wanted the actors in his movie to play their parts mostly straight, while Hanks and Scolari were improvisation comics on a sitcom. Tootsie isn't a bad story, though I wish they hadn't poked fun at the Syracuse playhouse.
