Review of Too Beautiful for You (1989) by John W — 15 Feb 2008
Some have accused this film of being shallow. I don't see it. The cinema is a visual medium so audiences judge characters by their appearances alone. As Depardieu's wife Bouquet's character is somewhat brittle but not sufficiently so for an audience to overlook her obvious beauty and elegance whilst Depardieu's attraction to the decidedly frumpy Balasko is not sufficiently explained to be shared by the audience.
But surely that is the point? It is not always clear to others what lovers see in each other.
