Review of Tony Takitani (2004) by Eugene S — 12 Jul 2008
I think the film sticks too closely to its literary origins. I haven't read the short story this was based on, but it's clear from the constant voiceover narration, which got annoying pretty quicky, and the equally annoying scrolling transitions, that this was more akin to a comic book or a novel.
Then there's the ugly and drab color palette, which further embalms the lifeless, heavy handed story. I don't see how anyone can compare this with Ozu.
