Review of Toni Erdmann (2016) by Martin D G — 17 Feb 2017
Not many films can combine laugh-out loud humour with poignancy as well as this one does. The joke teeth, which the main character wears in order to adopt his Toni Erdmann persona seem irritating and silly at first but grow in importance as the film grows until they take on a totemic quality as a symbol of being able to approach life with humour and humanity.
The party scene towards the end is a triumph of film-making.
