Review of Tomorrowland (2015) by Jamie J — 21 Feb 2016
With Tomorrowland Disney are once again turning a theme park ride into a feature length film and seeing what happens, with surprisingly pleasant results.
So the world is in danger, there is a doomsday clock of sorts and a typically British villain in Hugh Laurie. So far so good, in reality the storyline is not terribly deep or meaningful, instead it takes a bit of a back seat to the sheer flight of fancy that director Brad Bird (of pixar fame) wants to take you on. There is a heavy use of cgi, but none of it ever really feels out of place, and it's nice to see also that Tomorrowland doesn't take itself too seriously, with little gags here and there, and the delightfully creepy android enforcers that never stop smiling. Well they made me laugh at least.
If anything though it is relative newcomer Britt Robertson that steals the show, bringing a boundless level of energy and enthusiasm that keeps up momentum through the perhaps overly long two hour plus run time, elsewhere it's another day at the office for George Clooney, also worth noting is the other newcomer Raffey Cassidy's savvy android Athena, if only for her ridiculously exaggerated, British accent, like Americans still don't realise that not all English people live in Buckingham palace and have tea with the Queen.
But that's a minor gripe in an otherwise thoroughly entertaining glance at the future.
