Review of Tommy Boy (1995) by Holly A — 01 Dec 2013
Tommy Boy is a good movie, not great, in my opinion, but one thing I don't get is the differing opinions between users and critics. I think critics went too hard on the silly humor but users like it because everybody else likes it. But whatever.
Tommy Callahan III is the son of the long time president of Callahan motor goods but the business is in doom when his father suddenly dies on his wedding day and Tommy and his sarcastic business associate Richard go across the country to persuade business owners to buy a set of brake pads.
There are a lot of opportunities for Tommy Boy, a lot of jokes that can build up with the scenarios. I like Tommy Boy but I wouldn't call it a classic comedy or even a cult classic. I think it has a good story and a good buildup and I loved Chris Farley's performance, but most of the humor was physical slapstick and one thing that stopped me from liking it was David Spade's extremely sarcastic character. I'd suggest you watch it, try it, and see what you think. It's a movie with surefire differing opinions for different people.
