Review of Tombstone (1993) by Jessi T — 22 Mar 2011
My major issue with this film is with Dana Delany and the entire romance aspect of the film. Westerns are inherently romantic if you look at the traditional Hollywood example, whether it be the romance of a man and his horse, a man and his best friend or, occasionally, a man and his lady. Although it's true that back in the day there was not much diversity in the female actresses and the trope tended to be a sweet little blonde getting herself in trouble, at least that was more believable than the ill-cast Delany. Her inclusion in the film led to unnecessarily saccharine moments and really cheesed up the place in an otherwise incredibly well-cast and well-acted film. I loved Russell and Kilmer and their dynamic, and I think that the other Earps, played by Elliott and Paxton, were fantastic. Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer save this from just being a so-so picture and really give some standout performances.
"What the hell you doin' this for, anyway?".
"Wyatt Earp is my friend.".
"Hell, I got lots of friends.".
"I don't.".
