Review of Tokyo Sonata (2008) by Gabriel G — 11 Jul 2009
Many people complained against that movie because such a realistic film mars the superb fantastic and horror Kurosawa's filmography. Well, they probably did not keep on mind that the worse ghost or monster the Japanese collective mind can build is the fear to be unemployed, and that's what this film is about.
A man in his 50's that can't face his horrible destination: to be unemployed. He also lives the horror to see that his two sons are having plans for their future. He faces the horror to accept he lives in a changing society, a Japan which is leaving the obsolete postwar model behind.
Believe me: it's a real horror movie, with a happy end. And probably the best Japanese movie of 2008, but this is just a personal opinion of a loyal Kiyoshi Kurosawa's fan.
