Review of Tokyo Sonata (2008) by Generoso F — 29 Jul 2009
Fairly standard family drama that takes it's cues from the superior Laurent Cantet film "Time Out" in which the fired patriarch of a family goes through the routine of "going to work" everyday and keeping his situation hidden from those he loves.
In "Tokyo Sonata" as opposed to "Time Out" attention is payed o the entire family and not just the father, this has two results I feel; in the positive, by examining the family structure as a whole we gain greater insight into the collapsing situation in Japan by seeing it's effect on the different generations but negatively I feel that a film of this length cannot give the adequate amount of time to fully understand each character so you lose intimacy.
What is to be admired is the switch in plot that director Kurosawa gives here, it is truly unique and shows that once the cycle of their lives changes, it is changed forever.
