Review of Tokyo Sonata (2008) by Ian L — 31 Jul 2010
Interesting in several aspects, the affects on salarymen of a decade or more of Japanese economic stagnation / outsourcing to China, the rituals and nature of urban Japanese domestic life and of marriage in Japan.
At times, these were enough to maintain my interest through a slow story that would have tested my patience in a French film. However, it was worth the wait as the characters each moved into crisis and on to a new equilibrium. Overall, a fascinating combination of routine and exceptional circumstances set in a culture that continues to surprise me.
