Review of Tokyo Gore Police (2008) by Rick S — 05 Aug 2008
The kind of film that will be appreciated by horror fans solely on the basis of its gore content and despised by the "discerning film-goer". It's a shame because underneath all the gore and V-Cinema aesthetic, the film is often quite experimental.
New director Nishimura shows himself to be quite talented, possessing the unbridled imagination of a child (the same reason why Michel Gondry is such a fine filmmaker). Some of the situations within the film are the kind that once someone has grown up they consider too illogical to be valid, but Nishimura won't let something like logic ruin his fun and his creative death sequences bring to mind the enjoyment I had as a child turning ordinary situations increasingly into more extreme situations.
Which also brings to mind the beat generation and authors such as William S. Burroughs who had a similar technique for writing.
