Review of Tokyo Gore Police (2008) by Angel R — 01 Apr 2009
I am not quite sure what to make of it. From the description, which is what I went by when I rented it, it sounded like a pretty good scifi film at the B-movie level. On the other hand, the film is a bit of a blend between some surrealism and a bad episode of "MXC" (the Spike show). Some of the fetish stuff is pretty cool, but the gore is more on the cheesy side rather than actually gory. The premise of police privatization was pretty good; it is a concept in futuristic films I find interesting. Oh, and the commercials in the film, which do serve to add some humor, are very reminiscent of Verhoeven's work in films like Robocop. So, kind of an ok film with a few good visual moments, but certainly there has to be something better.
Anyhow, it was different, and I would still take a chance on another film from this company. Then again, I was surprised my local video store carried this, so maybe I should make sure to rent other similar titles to encourage them given the "redness" of the town overall.
