Review of Tokyo Gore Police (2008) by Julio S — 24 Jun 2009
I wanted to give this 4 stars, but the movie seemed to drag and in hte end feels about 15 minutes too long. By the end I wasn't very interested anymore and the final scene - even for a movie like this - was too absurd.
But then again, that's the point of this movie and most gore-filled horror/action movies from Japan. They LOVE their sprays of blood whenever someone is stabbed or mutilated, and I've come to accept that as part of their movie "culture". The parallels to Cronenberg are there as you have fleshy weapons made from men and women's parts, and the special effects really are good. There are also the faux-ads for the privatized police a la Robocop and Starship Troopers that are humorous.
It's just by the end, you've grossed and shocked the audience in the first 30 minutes, you need more plot, and really this was tied together a little too loosely.
