Review of Tokyo Gore Police (2008) by John T — 29 Sep 2010
Tokyo Gore Police can be summarized in three words...what the fuck?! The best way I can describe this wildly bizarre film is a combination of The Thing, Dead Alive, Starship Troopers, and Kill Bill (or Ichi the Killer).
TGP isn't a movie you see, it's a movie you experience and then go brag to your friends about. It's far from perfect however. Some of the eccentric elements work whiles others fall flat. A girl who sprays acid from her breasts? Awesome.
An igor-type character who shoots human fists from an oversized revolver? Not so much. It's not the ideas that fall flat, it's often the execution. Some of the effects are so piss poor that it really cheapens the initial viewing of the film.
Plus the ending seems very anti-climatic (especially when compared to the rest of the film). Oddly enough, TGP suffers from being both underwhelming at times and overwhelming in others. But that isn't any reason why you shouldn't see it.
With the exception of Dead Alive, TGP is the GORIEST films I've ever seen. Plus it's set in Japan (which actually explains a lot).
