Review of Tokyo Godfathers (2003) by Greg R — 23 May 2016
Tokyo Godfathers appears to be many peoples least favorite Satoshi Kon film, I can see that for sure. Out of all of Kon's work, the story sticks to the traditional 3 act structure and is set firmly in reality this time.
It doesn't have Kon's signature fantastical or surreal elements thrown in, at least they don't appear nearly as often as his other movies. I'll be honest though, Tokyo Godfathers might be my favorite Kon film.
Not only are the visuals some of the best I've seen in any of his feature films, but I think it's near a perfect movie. Tokyo Godfathers is a surprisingly funny but dark and down-to-earth Christmas movie with an incredibly touching story, complex and relatable characters, and some of the deepest heart-tugging moments I have ever seen in an anime film.
I'm not sure if this is Satoshi Kon's best film, but of all the movies he has made, Tokyo Godfathers is the one that I wish I could make.
