Review of To the Devil a Daughter (1976) by Stephen C — 30 Jan 2012
The Final film in Hammers canon before its rebirth in 2009 ,is ok but compared to the Devil rides out is missing the deft touch of a Terence Fisher or a Freddie Francis.
The plot is interesting based as it is on a Dennis Wheatley ,but the trouble is you can see that by this time Hammer were crippled by a shortage of funds and so the proposed big bang ending was scrapped in favour of a more perfunctory and unsatifsying ending.
Richard Widmark does ok but rumours of his on set grumpiness are all to eveident as the film progresses.
Once again the acting Honours go the Christopher Lee as the Demonic Father Michael a struck off preist who wants to bring the devil back to earth by using the Nun played by Natassja Kinski and a rather unsavoury blood soaked baby thing which ruins any tension by being so laughable.
Its a Shame Hammer went out like this and oe only hopes that the studios return is a permanent one as I love all the Hammer films of old.
