Review of To Rome with Love (2012) by Maryann H — 25 Jul 2012
The reviewers are way off here or they are too young or too American to appreciate a truly funny movie, Woody Allen's best since Annie Hall. We saw it last night and we are still laughing. The Romes scene are delicious and it is worth it to see this movie just to spend a few hours in Rome. The movie begins with a police officer directing traffic in the Piazza Venezia and ends with a man standing on his balcony overlooking the Spanish Steps, remarking that everyone of the teaming crowd has a story and he can watch it all from his balcony.
Woody concentrates on 4 groups of people and the movie veers seamlessly from one story to another with never a boring moment. Woody is contemplating retirement-death, fame, adultery and young love. The characters are memorable. Begnini and Cruz sparkle. Woody's wife, a psychiatrist, is a perfect foil to the neurotic Woody who manages to convinces a mortician to sing Pagliacci on stage while taking a shower. It is classic Woody, but softer and Woody doesn't hog the spotlight. Ignore the bad review and go to see this one.
