Review of To Rome with Love (2012) by John M — 23 Jan 2013
I like how it uses Woody Allen's sense of humor here most of all. It's really a comedy more than anything and to make it meaningful is to make it a lot more less than Allen's other stuff (at least recently).
It has some great performances (most notably from Ellen Paige) but Allen is best when he's creating work that blends in humor with a meaningful and original subtext. He's been masterful with this before and "Midnight in Paris" proved he still has it.
This is just a simple comedy that tries to do more and fails on that level, but still is a funny film and much better than I would expect from an 80 year old man making a comedy.
