Review of To Return (1982) by Kenneth L — 13 Jan 2010
It's a very good movie, especially considering that you can reflect afterwards and realize that not all that much actually happened. What does happen is certainly interesting, including a couple of deaths, an apparent resurrection, and shocking, melodramatic revelations.
Penelope Cruz is very good here (better than she was in her Oscar-winning role in Vicky Christina Barcelona, where I thought she was a bit one note). She has a bit of a hardscrabble glamor, if that makes any sense, and the movie is definitely in love with her boobs.
Lola Dueñas is pretty funny as her sister. Carmen Maura is amusing as her mother. The movie has lots of bright colors, but not distractingly so. It's funny, and you get to see these crazy ladies live their lives.
It's odd, but I liked it.
