Review of To Return (1982) by David W — 07 Feb 2016
Volver means in Spanish, coming home or back, before anyone questions the title.
International films like any other film genre can produce turkeys to good films that are worthy viewing.
Volver is certainly worthy viewing.
It has a plot that a scriptwriter for a soap opera TV show would be proud of!
The colourful backdrop makes up for having to concentrate on dreary subtitles in much the same way as City Of God and Y Tu Mama Tambien.
I watched a very old Spanish film (Tristana) last week. Volver is modern. Stars the beautiful Penelope Cruz and has an interesting plot and pace.
Basically a family member who has seemingly died reappears (but not Ghostlike like an old Hammer horror).
If Volver was an English film it would compare to an episode of Eastenders in my opinion. The Spanish setting and language is definitely not Eldorado or Benidorm!
If this film ever appears on satellite TV. Check it out. It also makes it into the 1001 Films You Must See Before You Die list I believe.
