Review of To Return (1982) by John M — 20 Feb 2010
First of all, I think I need to move to Spain. I love Almodovar's vision of life -- where hookers and trannys always seem to come to the rescue. I also love non-endings. I mean, in an American film, there would have HAD to have been some resolution regarding the dead body. But in this movie, it isn't really even the point of the movie. It's all about motherhood -- christ, what was his relationship like with his mother anyway????
Really great film and firmly now cements in my mind that Penelope Cruz is a great actress.
My favorite exchange in the movie is when her landlord knocks on the door. She has been in the midst of hiding a dead, bloody body. When she answers, the landlord notices some blood on her neck. And her response, "Woman troubles." And the landlord doesn't even bat an eye. Priceless.
