Review of To Return (1982) by Ross P — 06 Feb 2013
A quiet achiever this film is mesmerizing in its simplicity and draws you in through the wonderfully layered relationships between these women. Though ultimately it's a neatly structured story that ties all loose ends and the ending leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion, the richness of the culture and family relationships makes these characters wholesome, funny, identifiable and undeniably intriguing. I was surprised by the humour here, subtle yet extremely effective and the film moves between the drama and comedy seamlessly.
This is a film I had sitting in the pile for quite some time, I'm not sure why I was so hesitant to make time to watch it but now am happy that I did. Entertaining and simply put beautiful. I'm happy to see Cruz in a role she is suited to, she is much more enjoyable to watch in films such as this, as opposed to American dribble.
