Review of To Return (1982) by Joel A — 03 Mar 2013
Volver's plot seems to be all over the place. I loved The Skin I Live In--it was a fascinating movie--but I couldn't get involved with Volver. Parts are funny, but the plot line just never seems to come together to make much sense, except for the twist I saw coming from WAY off.
Why the song in the voice that was obviously not Penelope Cruz's? And no way two women could have dug the hole for the deep freeze in one night, let alone that Paco had no friends to wonder where he was.
Then there's how Raimunda is operating a restaurant that has no health inspection or license in a country like Spain that has red tape up to your eyebrows for everything. How stupid does Almodovar think his audience is? Sorry, artistic license just doesn't cover it!
