Review of To End All Wars (2001) by Christian S — 16 May 2012
I didn't know what to expect with this film, but I figured it would be solid with a great cast featuring Robert Carlyle, Kiefer Sutherland, and Ciaran McMenamin. What I got, however, was a powerful and moving story (based on real events) about P.
O.W.s working on the Burma Railway in a Japanese prison camp. In "Bridge Over the River Kwai" fashion, the story follows the prisoners and how they cope with the brutality of their captors and the friendships they forge with one another.
Perhaps the most inspiring character is Mark Strong's Dusty Miller, a man who is so willing to sacrifice and forgive in the face of horrific circumstances. I definitely recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in history and wants to watch a thought-provoking, challenging film.
