Review of To Die For (1995) by Maeve D — 15 Feb 2008
This is one of Nicole Kidman's best performances ever and the greatest dark comedy film you can find.
It shares the general basis of the true story of a teacher, Pamela Smart, who seduced a male student into murdering her husband. But more than that, this is a testament to the sycophantic media culture of America and the disturbing obsession with celebrity that some people have, including the national media. Slowly you witness the manipulation of a confused, hopeless kid who doesn't know down from up played to perfection by Joaquin Phoenix. The ending is among the most satisfying of any movie, as Dan Hedaya's character receives of phone call of "confirmation".
