Review of To Die For (1995) by Matt K — 15 Oct 2007
There is one thing, that above all the other delights make this film and concept work so brilliantly - Nicole Kidman. It's one of her best performances, and it's she who holds the film together, locking it in its ridiculous yet fantastic and blackly comic ideals.
The premise is set up through a series of mockumentary style interviews and sequences that reveal to us the rest of the story - how one fame-obsessed woman will do anything to be on TV. Kidman plays her perfectly - dim-witted and clumsy, cold, sneaky and dangerous - and still hilarious.
The film's score really emphasises the mood too, fleshing out the darkness in almost every scene. And still, behind the comedy and irrational nature of the film, there is a lot of truth hidden beneath the tale - the lengths people will go to stretched probably only a little, and not as shocking as we may first contemplate.
