Review of To Die For (1995) by Mjs M — 23 Jun 2008
This Gus Van Sant film opens with news flashes saying that the husband of a local weather girl had been murdered and she was the main suspect. With this in the opening scene the question is clearly not "what?", but "how?" and "why?".
The film is clearly based on the Pamela Smart case, and it seems to have borrowed some of its narrative style from Agnès Varda's Vagabond, in that it features mock-interview footage from side characters.
The way the story plays out is not particularly noteworthy, but the style is interesting and it's held together by a very good Nicole Kidman performance.
