Review of To Die For (1995) by Carla — 21 Aug 2008
Gus Van Sant is another favorite. His films are RAW, that's why. When you stare at a shot, it's as pure as an Andy Warhol painting, and as clear as a bell. And this film is just the same. It combines a want to become famous with a need to be seen, and it's just brilliant how they coincide.
Nichole Kidman plays the the ruthless Suzanne Stone (of which was Oscar worthy, but that's now a thing of the past), and wants to be famous. So, she joins a local news station, and the rest is history.
Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix join in on the ride, as they were only kids, it seems, playing Suzanne's subjects. When Gus makes a film, he makes it with such grace (with a few exceptions), that it's easy to get lost in the frame of action, and To Die For is exactly that.
