Review of To Die For (1995) by Tino R — 16 Mar 2011
It's so nineties. That is To Die For's most prominent feature. It's a dark comedy written by Buck Henry (the guy who wrote The Graduate!) that at once tries too hard (some of the satirical jokes are real groaners after a while) and doesn't try hard enough (resorts to tired dark comedy cliches).
In that sense, it's quite the disappointment as a Gus Van Sant film, but it still retains some value in its director's trademark kitschiness, plus some fine turns from Nicole Kidman, Joaquim Phoenix and Casey Affleck (all terribly young).
Plus, David Cronenberg makes a cameo as a mobster! So it can't be all bad, unless you don't know who David Cronenberg is and don't give a jot regardless. Either way, think carefully before watching this dated little flick.
