Review of To Die For (1995) by Charlie M — 19 Dec 2014
Director Gus Van Sant and writer Buck Henry's skewering of a fame and media obsessed culture. Nicole Kidman plays a Pamela Smart-like character who seduces, charms and manipulates two feeble minded and horny teenage boys, Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck, into killer her husband, the underrated Matt Dillon, who she believes is too small-time for her big dream at becoming a famous weather girl.
It's a sharp and darkly humorous film that is is helped by a strong supporting cast that includes lleana Douglas (who provides a great coda to the film), Wayne Knight, Kurtwood Smith and cameos by George Segal and a very memorable one by David Cronenberg.
Danny Elfman provides a terrific score that balances Kidman's bubbly characters with also her very dark side. I also liked that this film was when director Van Sant was still including Tom Peterson in all of his films.
