Review of To Catch a Thief (1955) by Jon B — 24 Apr 2008
Popcorn fare from Hitchcock in this Cary Grant/Grace Kelly vehicle set on the French Riviera. It's got some great dialogue and great moments, but overall just feels a bit flat compared to some of the other greats.
I think it's just missing the element of suspense -- there's not enough of a sense of urgency in Cary Grant needing to catch the Cat. Also, the relationship between Grant and Kelly isn't developed; it just suddenly happens, and it's a bit unbelievable. Then again, if Cary Grant were a car, he'd have a bumper sticker that said "Pussy Magnet" on it, so maybe it was believable in 1955.
