Review of To Catch a Thief (1955) by Mikael K — 22 Apr 2010
A Hitchcock classic that is famous for being very straightforward and traditionally stylish as opposed to being experimental and psychologically effective like many of the director's most respected works.
"To Catch a Thief" is a simple, entertaining but almost comically obvious "mystery" about a series of jewel thefts in the beautiful French Riviera. The plot is exactly as silly as the premise suggests, but Hitchcock knew how to turn even the corniest of stories into decent entertainment. And decent entertainment is what he achieved here. With Grant and Kelly leading and the Riviera serving as a cinematically pleasant setting, this film is a nice, if ultimately pointless excercise in simple, predictable and at times even dumb mystery storytelling.
