Review of To Catch a Thief (1955) by Forrest K — 08 Jul 2011
To Catch a Thief has a promising premise, but apart from some picturesque French vistas and one mildly entertaining rooftop chase, the whole thing is a bunch of dull banter. I've never been sure what the fuss is about Cary Grant - he's a bloodless protagonist, with a monotonous delivery and one emotion that seems to be vague smugness.
No exception here, although there's the added hilarity of him playing a Frenchman entirely sans accent. Perhaps the G-rated double entendres were more entertaining in 1955, but this is one "classic" that hasn't aged well.
