Review of To Catch a Thief (1955) by Raphael H — 08 Sep 2013
This is a very enjoyable Hitchcock outing. Though it has many trademark Hitchcock tropes (wrong man on the run, beautiful blonde, double entendres and funny dialogue while eating food) it's more of a comedy and a romance than a thriller.
The locations in the South of France are spectacular (as is the aerial photography) and the dialogue crackles with wit. The car chase along windy mountain roads is very effective and of course Cary Grant and Grace Kelly are perfectly cast.
The basic idea of the film will be much more spectacularly done in the superior 'North by North West' but this does not disappoint as a thoroughly entertaining and lush piece of mid-50s cinema.
