Review of Titus (1999) by Stephen L — 02 Apr 2008
The setting is sometimes silly, but that's the only drawback here. Anthony Hopkins is amazing in the title role and Jessica Lange plays an excellent foil to him. The supporting cast is as interesting as they are talented.
They pull off this adaptation exquisitely. While the settings may be odd they are gorgeously shot and as with her other films Julie Taymor creates a visual masterpiece. It's a faithful adaptation, minus the automobiles and pinball machine, of a work it seems nobody bothers to read anymore b/c it's not as good as Shakespeare's other plays.
..maybe this will change that at some point.
