Review of Titus (1999) by Amanda C — 15 May 2012
Julie Taymor and Shakespearean tragedy were made for each other. She captures the beauty of his work as well as the disturbing violence of it with a steady and detailed hand. Every frame is important and every square inch of the screen is used to its fullest.
As with all her work Titus is visually impeccable. Stunning and horrific in equal measure. Elliot Goldenthal's score complements Taymor's visual sense mirroring the beauty and horror of the image in the soundtrack.
A stellar cast complements the visual mastery, each giving fantastic performances, led by Jessica Lange's brilliant portrayal of Tamora, blending the vengeful temptress with a mother's love for her children.
Overall Titus is a visual triumph and worth watching solely for the artistic value of the work. Fortunately it is more than just nice to look at with every aspect of the production working in perfect synergy.
