Review of Titus (1999) by Ivan C — 05 Jan 2009
This movie is the one I recommend to people who think Shakespeare doesn't have anything "cool" like sex and violence in it because he's all "old stuff." Of course now I must warn people how that, like the play Titus Andronicus, this movie is terribly disturbing and violent. The performances are excellent, though none more so than Harry J. Lennix as Aaron.
Titus reminds me a bit of McKellan's Richard III since it too has a mix of period style, the original play's language, and 20th Century technology. Personally I love this sort of historically fuzzy adaptation, which has its roots in Shakespeare for almost as long as it has been performed (many original actors would not remove anachronistic apparel when performing plays).
