Review of Titus (1999) by Madeline M — 07 Sep 2009
Aesthetically, I really enjoyed this movie and I think Julie Taymor made great choices as far as movement is concerned. However, her interpretation mostly hinged upon people shouting, and I don't think that choice is as impressive as she thinks it is. Certainly it does very little to aid character depth.
So, unsurprisingly, my favorite performances were Harry J. Lennix as Aaron (evil, but also badass) and Colm Feore as Marcus (the only sane person in the play) who didn't have to raise their voices to convey emotion or high stakes. It's not totally Taymor's fault: Titus Andronicus is not always a very good play.
