Review of Titus (1999) by John F — 14 Jun 2007
The best Shakespeare I've seen in any medium. And from Shakespeare's worst play, no less. Taymor realized that for the story to work, the whole world it happened in had to be mad, so that the individual excesses in the show could be seen to be understandable reactions by individuals to a world beyond individual control.
Shakespeare's crazy exercise in Senecan violence is transformed here into a shattering tragedy about a man out of step with his time. Titus is loyal to a regime and a country he always thought was a force for good.
Through the story of his fall, Titus is brought to the realization that not only is his beloved empire a force for good no longer, but that it never was. Magnificent.
