Review of Titanic (1997) by Superbat — 01 Jun 2021
Titanic is a brilliant epic which combines a dazzling display of special effects with a compelling story. As the title of the film indicates, it's concerned with the infamous ocean liner which sunk on its maiden voyage. The technical aspects of this movie are simply outstanding and don't get the attention which they deserve. There isn't a director around who could've visually depicted the Titanic's sinking better than James Cameron, who succeeds in making the ship's sinking as realistic and palpable as possible. The sinking of the Titanic in this movie is undoubtedly the greatest disaster scene that I've seen in any movie.
As for the film's story itself, it does more than enough entertained throughout the movie. While the Titanic's sinking is a true story (and many real figures do appear the film), the film's two protagonists are fictional. The movie's story is centered around Jack and Rose, two young adults from polar opposite backgrounds who fall in love on the ill-fated voyage. DiCaprio and Winslet are great as the leads. Their characters grow on you as the film progresses, so much so that you're looking out for them as the events of the sinking begin to unfold. While I would normally question the use of fictional characters in order to tell a true story, it definitely works in this scenario.
Overall, Titanic is a brilliant epic/romance which even exceeded the expectations which I had going into it.
