Review of Titan A.E. (2000) by Jesse H — 12 Aug 2009
The movie seems to focus primarily on the visual effects, leaving plot completly out of the picture.
I'll just get straight to it, I enjoy this movie, but watching it is practically just a pass-time when there's nothing else to do.
The plot is almost unimaginably weak. It's nothing more than cliche, and it even manages to leave some plot holes in the end, which I honestly find hard to believe with such a simple storyline. The basic plot can be summed up in about half a sentence: Earth is gone and we have to bring it back. Perhaps I'm being a little unfair, or harsh, but keep in mind that this is comming from someone who enjoys the movie.
The visuals are the redeeming elements of this movie, and save it from being just another movie that no one should care about; they're simply outstanding. The blend of 2-D, and 3-D elements is pulled of nearly flawlessly. There are, however, some issues with painted backgrounds, and while this is nothing bad, considering how well done they are; some backgrounds were simply laughable.
(ie. Cale and Korso are escaping the Drej for the first time, and enter a long, horizontal spire. Right before they enter it, is appears to be some kind of wall).
Although that's really more nit-picking than anything, seen as how the backgrounds don't take away from the whole expierience.
The execution was... Acceptable, the voice acting was spot on, and the sequences with animation were very well done. The soundtrack is simply awesome, the use of a "real," 4-member rock band, rather than, say, an orchestra, was pulled off to utter perfection. On a different note, the Drej antagonists are some of the best-looking guys I've seen in the sci-fi genre, and remain a solid positive element in the movie.
To sum it all up, Titan AE is NOT a bad movie, it's just not a very good one. If they added in a bit more attention to te plot, it would have been much better. The Drej's intentions are vaguley explained, but, in the end, they're just villains, evil to the core, and aren't special from other villains in any sort of way. Perhaps if they were portrayed with emotions, or dialogue that wasn't so corney, they would be a far better antagonist. Overall, Titan AE won't impress everyone, but remains at the least a watchable, and enjoyable, movie.
+Excellent blend of 2-D and 3-D effects.
+Terrific voice acting.
