Review of Titan A.E. (2000) by Rainer K — 01 Dec 2011
An hybrid of classic cel and CGI animation like so many of the late 90s and early 2000s it just looks awesome. I'm not surprised that such a high number of animated sci-fi films got made during this short era because that's a natural fit for this style.
The visuals are not mindblowing but pretty good although the Drej look a bit awkward and it seems that animation was not yet ready to display such creatures in the right manner.
The plot and setting is familiar as it's a rip-off (or a cut-and-paste job like the consensus stated) of many other sci-fi stories. For me it looked quite Star Warsian in the beginning, also heavily borrowing from other classic adventure stories.
Nonetheless it was itself quite influential (Andrew Stanton definitely checked it out before making Wall-E - I'm sure) and some of the visual elements are groundbreaking.
Not only that most of its plot is recycled, it does what most Hollywood animated films do - it sacrifices drama for happy endings, improbable comebacks and cheap laughs (which the latter being only a minor problem).
