Review of Titan A.E. (2000) by Tanya K — 23 Jun 2010
In Titan A.E., not only do you lose yourself in an apocalyptic Sci-fi universe, but you forget you're watching animation. It's a rough-and-tumble ride through spectacular visuals which draw out the awe, beauty and dangers of space, where concepts parallel Earthly notions but with an extra terrestrial twist which makes them familiar yet unfamiliar.
You never know what lies ahead, be it energy riding space sprites (a galactic version of dolphins), a field of gigantic ice crystals or drifter colonies which are nothing more than floating shanty towns.
The story is smart and delivers a strong lesson of cherishing the small things and hits home the fact of planet Earth being our 'home' without which we'd literally be lost in space. And it does all this without coming across as preachy.
The sound design immaculately elevates the film to feature film standards as opposed to 'cartoon', and even though a stretch of the imagination is required as sound doesn't travel through space, we really don't mind that bit of anti-logic.
Well done Directors Don and Gary, I'm off to plant a tree...
