Review of Titan A.E. (2000) by Jason C — 18 Dec 2014
It got mixed reviews upon release, and quickly became a box office disaster, but Titan A.E. is still a worthwhile (although not spectacular) film that deserves a bit more attention than it receives. The film is a genuine example of a film that takes advantage of being animated to the fullest extent.
The visuals in the film are fantastic, and the world is simply one of the most inspired sci-fi settings I've seen outside of anime. While some critics have said that the film has a weak plot, I feel that the writers did their best to make a coherent and well-paced storyline in the confines of 90 minutes.
Yes, the film can feel a bit derivative at times, they tip-toe around adult issues (it's rated PG), and the script does take shortcuts. Despite it's problems, I feel Titan A.E. is one of the better animated films of the early 2000s that just didn't work with audiences (see also Treasure Planet and Atlantis the Lost Empire).
