Review of Titan A.E. (2000) by Horrorpunx610 — 11 May 2019
I remember liking this movie as a kid, back when it came out, but wasn't sure if it would hold up as an adult. I recently discovered it has a pretty substantial cult following, so I watched it again, for the first time in over a decade. I gotta say, I'm firmly on the side of those who think this film is underrated. It got the shaft at the time of release, due in part to poor marketing, plus western audiences not quite grasping the idea of an animated film for a slightly older audience than usual (keep in mind, we were just coming out of the Disney Renaissance, at the time). It's, by no means, a perfect film, but it's definitely far better than it was initially received.
Now, the film does have a few major flaws: the plot is average at best in terms of sci-fi, the characters could've been better developed and the universe more fleshed out. That said, there's something very likeable about this film. It has a sort of largeness of spirit to it, and you can sense the potential it had, even if it didn't fully live up to it. Also, it's just cool to see a Western animated film willing to push boundaries.
Interestingly enough, the universe of Titan AE *is* expanded upon quite well in spin-off novels and comics. It's just a bit baffling as to why none of this is seen in the film itself. If this were made into a series and streamed on Netflix or Hulu, I can see it being much more successful with today's audience than it was back in 2000.
