Review of Titan A.E. (2000) by Jose P — 02 May 2008
This is the exact definition of "mixed bag." The 3D effects are absolutely stunning, and the sheer imagination that went into the ships and environments blows everything Pixar's ever done out of the water; however, the 2D characters are ass-ugly with clunky animations that are truly bad enough to detract from the backgrounds.
Similarly, it's got a great soundtrack marred by retarded lyrics written just for the movie, and again the lyrics are so bad that they seriously detract from the score. The plot is wildly imaginative (the bad guys are some of the most creative I've ever seen in any sci-fi ever) but it's full of coincidences, pot holes, and poor characterization.
Its the kind of film that hints at something absolutely stellar, but is so crippled by ridiculously poor design decisions that you can't help but get hopelessly angry at it for not being what it should have been.
It's very entertaining, and I definitely suggest you check it out (it's on hulu for free, after all). Just don't expect it to be perfect.
