Review of Tin Cup (1996) by Mark F — 06 Jul 2007
Ron Shelton has a grapple hold on sports movies. Each comedy he has done has been about a different sport and have been about different themes and ideas. Here Costner is the down and out golfer past his prime but looking for one more grand moment.
The idea at first is that he will win the U.S. Open, but then it becomes about making the one impossible shot at the crucial moment. Costner wins nothing and is actually almost disqualified for going for his "defining moment", but the lesson in sports is that excellence fades but sometimes moments can define a person.
Going for them instead of being afraid is what matters. Tin Cup, a good subtle comedy, rings true.
